Yayasan Sime Darby's COVID-19 Relief Efforts

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted all aspects of society on a global scale. In Malaysia, we saw businesses experiencing temporary shutdowns and in some cases, permanent cessation; as well as people from all walks of life facing extreme difficulties financially and emotionally. Although the nation has entered into a Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) phase, many people are still facing severe challenges, and the fight against COVID-19 continues.

I am humbled to be leading Yayasan Sime Darby (YSD), the philanthropic arm of the 3 Sime Darby companies i.e. Sime Darby Plantation Berhad, Sime Darby Berhad and Sime Darby Property Berhad; as YSD has been able to do our part to support our country as we continue to weather this storm together. Our 3 donors have supported us all the way to undertake humanitarian efforts to ensure that as many Malaysians as possible are able to receive the help needed to fight the negative impact that COVID-19 has had on their lives. Since the start of the Movement Control Order (MCO) early this year, we have initiated multiple COVID-19 relief efforts in the form of various medical and non-medical aid in collaboration with countless partners.

As of August 2020, YSD had committed almost RM6.3 million through various partnerships to support relief efforts addressing the immediate needs of frontliners and communities impacted by COVID-19.

I would like to extend my appreciation to the YSD team who tripled their efforts during the start of the MCO and throughout the following laxer iterations of the MCO - working until late every night and over weekends. Despite having to adjust their routines while working from home, they went the extra mile so that YSD could give out aid to vulnerable communities hardest hit by the pandemic. I am immensely proud that my team has now adapted to working remotely from any location to ensure that our initiatives are rolled out smoothly.

Our first assistance to fight COVID-19 was to help fund medical volunteers, along with the logistics that had to accompany their work. Over the past few months, the YSD team and our partners have been hard at work ensuring that assistance is provided with distributing equipment such as ventilators, coverall suits, gloves, health screening sets, disposable face shields, and reverse osmosis (RO) equipment for dialysis patients, among other things. Not forgetting that basic sustenance and hygiene are essential especially during these times, we have also distributed food assistance, hand sanitisers and hygiene kits as well as cash vouchers to communities nationwide. These relief efforts have successfully assisted underprivileged families and individuals, students, Orang Asli households, medical and non-medical frontliners, and low-income individuals.

YSD in collaboration with Sime Darby Industrial distributed Tesco vouchers, food items and hygiene kits to 357 Sime Darby Industrial employees who fall under the low-income bracket.
I would like to thank all our partners who made all these initiatives possible on the ground. They are Sime Darby Plantation Berhad, Sime Darby Industrial Sdn Bhd, Sime Darby Property Berhad, the Government-Linked Companies (GLC) and Government-Linked Investment Companies (GLIC) Disaster Response Network (GDRN), MERCY Malaysia, Pusat Hal Ehwal Pelajar Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (HEP-UKM), Malaysia International Search & Rescue (MISAR), University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC), Perak State Park Corporation (PSPC), the Cultural Economy Development Agency (CENDANA), Tesco Malaysia, Econsave, Kechara Soup Kitchen, Dignity for the Children Foundation, UMFOM, Pusat Pengurusan Wakaf, Zakat dan Endowmen (WAZAN) at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), OKU Sentral, Borneo Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC), The Lost Food Project, the Sarawak Federation of Chinese Associations, Management and Ecology of Malaysian Elephants (MEME), Biji-Biji Initiative, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Global Environment Centre (GEC), Petaling Jaya Member of Parliament YB Marina Chin, House Of Hope (HOH), BeKind Malaysia, Sime Darby Football Club (SDFC), Hospis Malaysia, KRU Academy, Yayasan Orang Kurang Upaya Kelantan (YOKUK), Rotary Club Kota Kinabalu (RCKK), Persekutuan Perkhidmatan Masyarakat Ceylonese (PERMA), and Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (klpac).

As we continue striving for a COVID-19- free Malaysia, I have every faith in the ability of our team and our partners, together with many like-minded individuals and organisations in the country, to provide aid wherever possible to those who critically need it. Let us also remind each other to continue following the SOPs put in place in this battle against the pandemic. Together, united as one, we shall overcome this global challenge, and whatever other challenges that may come after the COVID-19 pandemic is finally over.
