Yayasan Sime Darby Empowers Malaysians to Turn Everyday Actions into Environmental Impact
Environment

In conjunction with World Environment Day 2026, Yayasan Sime Darby (YSD) brought together communities, environmental organisations, corporate volunteers and members of the public to demonstrate the value of simple actions at home in contributing towards broader environmental outcomes, from reducing waste and supporting biodiversity conservation to strengthening climate resilience. The event was officiated by Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, YB Tuan Syed Ibrahim bin Syed Noh.

Held under the theme “Cultivating Sustainability Through Volunteering & Community Action” and guided by the message “Small Actions, Big Impact”, the event reflects the global World Environment Day 2026 campaign, which calls for collective climate action and greater participation from businesses and communities in building a more sustainable future. By translating environmental awareness into practical action, YSD World Environment Day 2026 aimed to show how everyday choices can contribute to a more sustainable and climate-resilient future.

Anchored around four key focus areas - Zero Waste Initiatives, Recycling and Upcycling Practices, Biodiversity Conservation and Tree Planting, as well as Climate Action and Climate Adaptation, the event encouraged participants to adopt practical sustainability practices while strengthening environmental stewardship within their communities.

Officiated by YB Tuan Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, the event highlighted the importance of collaboration between government, philanthropic entities, environmental organisations and communities in advancing Malaysia’s sustainability agenda.

Speaking at the event, YB Tuan Syed Ibrahim emphasised the importance that policies and legislation must be supported by sustained action on the ground.

“However, policies and legislation alone are not enough. Achieving Malaysia’s environmental ambitions requires a whole of society approach and continuous action on the ground.

“This brings us to the core of today’s theme, “Cultivating Sustainability Through Volunteering & Community Action”, driven by the slogan “Small Actions, Big Impact.”

“Whether it is managing plastic and electronic waste, practising composting, planting trees or cleaning lakes, sustainable living must become part of our daily routines,” he said.

Puan Sri Normah Hashim, Governing Council Member of Yayasan Sime Darby, said climate action must be made accessible and relevant to everyday life if lasting environmental impact is to be achieved.

“Climate action is often viewed as the responsibility of governments, institutions or global movements. However, meaningful change begins with the choices we make every day. Whether it is reducing household waste, managing waste responsibly, creating green spaces within our communities or supporting conservation efforts, every action contributes towards a larger goal.

“Through YSD World Environment Day 2026, we hope to inspire more Malaysians to become environmental stewards and recognise that sustainability is not a distant concept, but something that can be practised in our homes, schools, workplaces and communities. When these actions are multiplied across society, they contribute towards healthier ecosystems, stronger climate resilience and a more sustainable future for all,” she said.

The celebration featured a range of hands-on activities, powered by YSD’s 98 corporate volunteers from Sime Berhad, SD Guthrie Berhad and Sime Darby Property Berhad. Activities included sustainability-themed treasure hunts, lake clean-up initiatives, gardening and composting workshops, waste segregation demonstrations, upcycling activities, environmental talks and biodiversity-focused learning experiences for children and families.

Beyond individual action, the event highlighted the importance of collective effort in addressing environmental challenges. By bringing together environmental partners, researchers, schools, social enterprises and community organisations, YSD World Environment Day 2026 fostered greater collaboration, knowledge exchange and community participation in advancing sustainability.

In conjunction with the event, YSD announced a RM750,000 sponsorship to Free Tree Society for Phase 3, spanning three years from July 2026 to June 2029. This support will advance its Environmental Stewardship (ESP) and On‑The‑Go (OTG) programmes, which promote environmental awareness, strengthen community participation, and encourage climate‑positive action, particularly among underserved urban communities in the Klang Valley, including students, educators, and B40 households.

YSD also committed RM300,000 to Phase 2 of the award‑winning sustainability initiative, Project A Reka Cipta (PARC), for a nine‑month period. Located in Taman Subang Ria and led by Sime Darby Property Berhad in collaboration with EPIC Homes, Phase 2 will integrates biodiversity, circularity, and community wellbeing, while nurturing local changemakers and creating a scalable model for sustainable urban parks in Malaysia.

The event was also attended by YBhg. Puan Sri Normah Hashim, Governing Council Member of Yayasan Sime Darby; YBhg. Dato’ Amirul Azizan Dato’ Sri Abd. Rahim, Mayor of Subang Jaya City Council; YBrs. Dr Hajjah Yatela Zainal Abidin, Chief Executive Officer of Yayasan Sime Darby; YBrs. Hajah Azuri Azizah Haji Saedon, Deputy Director General of Development, Department of Environment; YBhg. Dato’ Haji Wandi Yazid Haji Yaakob, Director of the Department of Environment Selangor; YBrs. Miss Chua Eng Imm, Chief People Officer, Sime Darby Property; and YBrs. Dr Yasmin Rasyid, General Manager, Sustainability, Sime Darby Property; alongside representatives from environmental organisations, academia, schools, community groups and corporate partners.

Through its Environment pillar, YSD has been supporting initiatives worth RM225 million since inception for biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, environmental education and community-led sustainability solutions across Malaysia. World Environment Day 2026 reflects YSD’s belief that lasting environmental impact is achieved when individuals, communities and organisations work together to transform awareness into action that begins at home and community level, contributing to long-term environmental resilience.
